1961年5月17日,恩雅出生在爱尔兰西北部的Gaeltact。她被家人称为Eithne Ni Bhraonain。Eithne在爱尔兰语中是"火"的意思，也是Aidan女性化的叫法。但是由于"Eithne"发音
恩雅的音乐生涯真正开始于为David Puttnam的电影“青蛙王子”写配乐。虽然那一次在电影中并没有出现她自己演奏的乐曲，但在电影原声带中却收录了两首恩雅自己演奏的乐曲。这时恩雅决定用“Enya”取代“Eithne”作为她的名字
恩雅的音乐被世人所喜爱。1993年2月，第35届葛莱美奖揭晓，Enya的[Shepherd Moons]专辑无庸置疑地拿下最佳New Age专辑。Enya推出的专辑[The Memory Of Trees]，在第39届葛莱美奖第二次获得最佳New Age专辑。
